Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “bayağı sindirilebilirler”) tanımlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine sargılanmasıyla oluşan kesik polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino hamız lakırtııntısı ile başkası arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” veya peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (veya çok nüshada polipeptit zir birimi barındırır). Asıl başkalık peptitlerin kesik, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi esnasında her amino hamız, öteki amino asite kadimî, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle sargılanır. Polipeptid örgüsına sertlan amino asitlerin her biri örgüya peptid sargılarıyla sargılanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir deniz çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Yaklaşık bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Aşina en uzun polipeptit, yaklaşık 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda bulunan “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine sertlan amino asitlere lakırtııntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki lakırtııntı, bağ yapmamış, hür amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin öteki ucundaki hür α-karboksil grubu olan lakırtııntıya C ucu adı verilir.
